MASS DEER SERVICE
MASSDEERSERVICE HELPS LANDOWNERS REDUCE "NUISANCE DEER"
PROBLEMS IN THE SUBURBS OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS
MassDeerService is an association of conservation-minded
individuals who share a passion for the outdoors. In fact, the founder, Dan Wolff is an entrepreneur, and will be opening a new business in the pet industry in early 2009. If your interested in learning more about Dan's self-service dog wash, doggie daycare and retail product store located in Waltham, MA, please visit www.hrpupsnsuds.com
Dan is a 44 year
old married father of two boys, who
spent most of his childhood in Wellesley Hills, MA. He attended private high
schools in Weston and Groton, Massachusetts and attended College in Saratoga Springs,
New York where he received his BS degree in Business.
Dan was introduced to the shooting sports and hunting while
living and working in the Elmira, NY area over 20 years ago. He participates
in archery,
rifle, shotgun and black powder hunting in Massachusetts and NY. He
has completed courses in hunter safety and handgun safety, and is a senior member of the Woburn Sportsman's Association. He keeps well
informed on issues related to shooting and hunting and considers safety, responsibility
and conservation his
top priorities.
When issues with the increasing deer population started
to surface about 15 years ago, he set up this successful program in Dover, MA that allowed him to not only to do what he loved, but also to help out landowners with
a burgeoning problem.
This site was set up to inform residents of the MetroWest
area of Boston, Massachusetts about this valuable free service.

If you are a landowner living in towns such as Weston,
Wayland, Lincoln, Dover, Sherborn or surrounding communities, MassDeerService may be able
to help you.
You are probably aware of the issues and problems the
somewhat recent deer population explosion in your area have created. You may have
been inconvenienced by hungry deer, and may feel familiar with "the big picture"
as problems have burgeoned in the past decade.
- Hungry deer may have decimated your valuable ornamental
landscapes. Where most wildlife biologists consider the optimum carrying capacity
to be 13 deer per square mile, certain suburban areas contain more than 30 deer per square mile!
This is a serious issue affecting both the human populations as well as management
species such as the Whitetail.
- In Massachusetts alone, a large number of deer
are hit with cars every year, and in a certain percentage of collisions, have caused
fatalities or serious injury to vehicle operators and/or their passengers.
- Lyme disease…
The deer tick can transmit certain bacteria that cause Lyme disease. While education
and awareness have proven positive in the reduction of new cases every year, as
long as deer populations are high and/or concentrated, people will continue to contract
this disease.
However, you need not feel too vulnerable. You
are not automatically infected if a deer tick simply bites you. As I understand
it, a young deer tick (which can be the size of a pencil tip) must have had a "blood
meal" which means it has fully attached itself to you for a period of 24 hours
or more, in order for the host to potentially become infected. So please use common
sense when outdoors and check yourself frequently.
- While we cannot make any promises, we can tell you
that in the past 15 years in our area, more than 100 whitetails including 27 bucks
have been removed from our participating landowner's properties. As deer are prolific breeders
in times that are good, that represents several hundred additional
deer that could have been added to the already stressed population!!!
